Chapter Ten

Early Monday morning Christy drove through the mountain pass, a cappuccino in her right hand as she steered with her left.

She’d stayed up until midnight as she packed, going through her closet to figure out what to bring. She’d had to dig through her dresser until, by some miracle, she’d found a pair of old jeans. It’d been so long since she’d worn any, she pretty much lived in skirts.

What did one wear in the country anyway? She’d decided to stick with her girly-girl roots and put on a denim skirt with a pink T-shirt that said Dancing Queen on it.

I’m doing it. She was actually heading over the mountains to farm country. Republican land, as Nate was so fond of calling it. Who knew what awaited her there. Maybe she really would milk a cow. Or farm things. Whatever that entailed.

She glanced at the clock on her dashboard and wiped a bead of sweat off her forehead. It was only ten in the morning and she was already sweating. And it was just going to get worse once she was on the other side of the mountains. The heat on average could be ten to fifteen degrees hotter. No matter, she could take it.

Or not. An hour later she admitted defeat. The heat was miserable, stifling, and just plain unbearable.

Damn her stupid apartment, she cursed silently. If she hadn’t insisted on living in that run-down piece of junk, she could have afforded a new car. A car with air conditioning. Oh God, air conditioning sounded better than sex with Adam right about now.

“I would sell my soul for air conditioning!” She moaned and stuck her arm out the window to try to create a breeze. It didn’t help. And then a bug smashed into her hand.

“Oh, ick!” She dragged her hand back inside and grabbed a napkin from her glove compartment, wiping down the small mess now covering her arm.

She tossed the napkin into the back of the car just as her cell phone rang. Christy scrambled to find it, surprised she even had reception out here.

She flipped it open. “Hello?”

“Are you thinking about me?”

“Hmm. Maybe I am, cowboy. Are you going to ask me what I’m wearing now?” Christy grinned as she balanced the phone between her shoulder and her ear.

Adam’s slow laughter drifted through the line, making her hot in an entirely different way. “Now that sounds like a great idea. What are you wearing, darlin’?”

“A skirt. A shirt.”

“And underneath?”

Christy grinned and couldn’t resist teasing him. “A bra with holes for my nipples and crotchless panties.”

There was silence on the other line, and she burst out laughing.

“I’m kidding, Adam.”

“I wish you weren’t. You have no idea how hard you just got me.”

“Trust me, I have an idea.” She squirmed in her seat, her panties growing wet as she thought about the other night in his truck. “Maybe we should do some shopping for that kind of thing when I arrive.”

“Unfortunately, Peppertown doesn’t have too many of those shops.
